Choosing the Right Color Palette for Your Home

May 27, 2021

One of the best parts of owning your dream home is having the ability to hand-select the colors of the walls and everything between them. While having options is a good thing, the sheer number of shades and hues available for your home can lead to paralysis by analysis.

You might be wondering how to choose the right paint color for your home in Poulsbo, WA. Luckily, there’s more than one way to do this. You can find a color palette that suits you but also looks tastefully beautiful. Here is how to choose the right paint color for your home.

Look in your closet

Just because your favorite color is deep red, that doesn’t mean your walls should be that color. And if you don’t like the look of canary yellow on a dress, then maybe you don’t want your loveseat or walls to be that color either!

If you don’t know where to begin, or what colors to consider, try taking a good hard look at your clothes. The color of your clothes can show what hues you favor or what you think makes you look good.

Use a color wheel

A color wheel is a solid way to begin selecting your colors. It has the benefit of showing which colors are diametric opposites, and which are similar in hue. The color wheel presents four main color palettes as follows:

  • Monochromatic: “Mono” means “one,” and this color scheme features one color, but multiple shades of it, ranging from quite dark to exceptionally light. For example, you could use purple, and implement a nice light lilac, a medium shade of purple and a deep dark purple for accents.
  • Complementary: This color palette features colors on opposite sides of the color wheel, like teal and pink or yellow and purple. This style is unique and audacious, and you could really set your home apart by using it.
  • Analogous: An analogous color palette uses three colors that are touching each other on the color wheel, such as red, orange and yellow or green, blue and purple. This combination offers variety in a gentle way because the colors aren’t completely different.
  • Contrast or triadic: This is the most colorful of all the styles because, as the triadic name suggests, it uses three contrasting colors on the color wheel. Some examples are yellow, red and blue or green, violet and orange. This bold combination could liven up any room.

60-30-10 rule

Once you’ve chosen your colors, many interior designers prefer to distribute the colors thusly: 60 percent of a dominant color, 30 percent of a secondary color and 10 percent of an accent color. If your color palette allows for it, many people like to use white or black as an accent color, because those can really make the other colors pop.
