Tips for Kitchen Remodeling

October 14, 2022

Remodeling your kitchen is one of the most practical home improvement projects you can undertake. However, it is also a highly involved project that requires careful planning to do correctly. When done properly, a kitchen renovation increases your home’s value and makes it a more enjoyable place to live. The question of "I want a new kitchen where do I start?" is a common one, and one we have heard at Coyote Hollow Construction more than once. By taking the time to understand the kitchen renovation process, you can be better prepared to improve your home.

Kitchen Renovation Steps

1. What You Need Versus What You Want

The first step in any good kitchen remodeling project is setting your goals. Consider what you don’t like about your current kitchen and focus your remodeling project on correcting these problems. While certain additions and changes may be nice, they may not be the core issue you’re trying to address. Consider your needs first and wants second. While some wants are nice, they should always come after core needs have been met.

2. Design and Floor Plan

There are several ways to design the layout of your kitchen. Common layouts include One-Wall designs, U-Shape, Double-L, L-Shape, and Corridor, just to name a few. You can design a kitchen floor plan by hand, with computer software, or with the assistance of your contractor who has a great deal of experience in this area.

3. Preparation

Part of kitchen renovation is preparing to be without a kitchen for a while. You can set up a temporary kitchen, change your eating habits for a few weeks, or cook meals in advance and freeze them. Eating out and easy-to-prepare meals via a countertop microwave are also options.

4. Tearing Down the Old Kitchen

Once preparations have been made, the next step is to tear out the old kitchen. Appliances, surfaces, cabinets, counters, and sinks are all removed, leaving an empty room for you to build a brand-new kitchen. While involved, this process can be quite easy, provided you don’t have to do more complex work, such as tearing out walls to expand your kitchen space.

5. Building the New Kitchen

Once your kitchen has been properly prepared, it’s time for the build itself. The first step is the installation of the framing that the kitchen will be built around. The installation of proper wiring, plumbing, and HVAC needs is performed next before walls, ceiling, floors, cabinets, and other structures are built around and on top of the exposed framework. Appliances and fixtures are typically installed last.

6. Final Touches

Once the work is completed, you can move on to the final step. A quick inspection will ensure every goal you had for the project was accomplished. This is also a good time to review random odds and ends, such as modeling and handles. Once everything is completed, you can start enjoying your new kitchen.
